The Mill

The palace complex of the Lords of Mancera had a flour mill, the remains of which are still preserved today. It was a working mill for more than 400 years, grinding cereal for the residents of the village and surrounding areas, until the middle of the 20th century. Additional mills opening in other villages combined with industrial advances brought an end to its useful life.

Flour mills were very common in Castile. They were usually located outside the village, next to a river.  In this case, the mill was located within the village, which demonstrates the importance of the person who built it.  To make it work, the water had to be brought from the Sempron River and this was accomplished by building a channel measuring more than one kilometre long, undoubtedly a major undertaking for the time. The town council has been working to clean and restore it since 2016.
